New Year, New Angles

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the first installment of my new blog: Solution Saturday! The purpose of this blog will be to show you all current projects I'm working on, while providing helpful tips!

The New Year is a great way to invite positive habits into your life. Usually with resolutions, we often give ourselves too large of a goal and end up feeling frustrated and guilty when we don't achieve it. This year, don't give up on your resolution, but instead try changing the way you approach it. Here are some tips for reaching your New Year's goal of bringing organization into your home, and how to maintain it using the 20 Minute Rule.

1. Select a Closet or Drawer in Your Home that Needs Organizing

You know the place. That one place that makes you grimace every time you manage to pry open the door. The one stuffed with papers and receipts from 2010 that somehow continue to breed despite your best efforts. That's the one you need to tackle first. You don't need to fix it all at once, but day by day you'll begin to see a difference, and it will make organizing the less cluttered spaces so much easier.

2. Get Three Large Containers or Garbage Bags & Label-Donate, Keep, Throw out

3. Set a Timer for 20 Minutes

You can do just about anything for 20 minutes. When the timer rings, you are finished sorting.

4. Take Each Item and Sort- Donate, Keep or Throw Out

Really consider the item before sorting. Run through a mental checklist: Do I use this item? Do I like this item? Could someone I know actually use it? Does it belong in another part of my home?

5. Say Goodbye

Take the donate bag to Goodwill, Salvation Army or your local charity that accepts donations. Throw the garbage out. Place the keep items in the area where they belong. Whatever you do, don't let it all sit by the back door for "when you have time". Do it while you're still being productive.

6. Repeat Steps 1-5 Every Day

Remember—Our harshest critics are ourselves. Everyone has clutter, and we've all had times where it feels too overwhelming to even consider sorting it. Starting to change your habits can be the hardest part, but also the most rewarding.

That's all for now, happy Saturday and happy organizing!

Best,

Laura
